Breaking Ground

Fencing and equipment has begun appearing along the Normal Street median in Hillcrest in preparation for construction of the much-anticipated Normal Street Promenade. A public celebration of the kickoff with city officials will be held at 10:00a, Feb. 16, under the Pride flag at Normal Street and University Avenue.
Once completed, the $27 million project will feature a park area with tables and umbrellas, a cafe housed in a remodeled vintage street car, and a new bike lane. The promenade is a vision that has been on the drawing boards of city planners and neighborhood activists for several years. Completion is expected by mid-2026.
In the meantime, the Sunday Hillcrest Farmers Market has temporarily moved onto University Avenue, between Herbert Street and Park Boulevard. The relocated operation has so far gone without a hitch, offering more elbow room for vendors and visitors and alike. Free parking remains available at the nearby Department of Motor Vehicles at 3960 Normal St.
