Bakers Unite in Bankers Hill

By Frank Sabatini Jr.

You’ll be hard pressed to find pastries as diverse and complex as what the new Michi Michi bakery in Bankers Hill cranks out every Thursday through Sunday. The business was launched by Vanessa Corrales, who also owns Split Bakehouse in La Mesa.

For this venture, she brings together a collective of local bakers who work from commercial kitchens around town to showcase an ever-changing selection of impressive baked goods ranging from sweet to savory. The quaint shop also offers creations by in-house pastry chef Arely Chavez.

Ingredients for most of the items are sourced from nearby farms.

The culinary adventure at Michi Michi potentially runs the gamut from the-cream cheese Danish and matcha crazy bread to pastries containing things like spicy creamed corn and shakshuka-style eggs. Count yourself lucky if you can get your hands on an Earl Gray morning bun or a piece of passionfruit cheesecake. Both are among the fastest sellers when available.

Other popular goods we’ve seen rotate through the display cases are lavender-goat cheese mochi, rice pudding Danish, and pistachio-raspberry galette.

A word of advice: On the days of operation (8:00a to 2:00p), the later you get there, the emptier the shelves.
