Did You Know…
By Frank Sabatini Jr.
…that the late actor-filmmaker Dennis Hopper was a San Diego native who got his start at The Old Globe Theatre? In his late teens he trained at the Globe and performed there in a handful of stage productions, including works by Shakespeare.
In this 1963 interview segment produced by local CBS News 8, the then 20-something Hopper talks about his start in the television and film industry while on a visit here after settling in Los Angeles, where he had television gigs and several movies under his belt.
Also, did you know that in 1963 art films and art movie houses were thriving in the U.S.? (We didn’t.) That subject is discussed in the interview as well, breaking the notion that art films grew more out of the 70s and 80s in this country.
