Get Your TJ-Style Hot Dog Fix in the East Village
By Frank Sabatini Jr.
Hot dog aficionado Gustavo Tonella is bringing his specialty to The Church tasting room inside The Lost Abbey, where he has begun slinging bacon-wrapped hot dogs common throughout Tijuana and other parts of Mexico.
Served on bolillo buns, the dogs flaunt various toppings ranging from bell peppers, tomatoes, and avocado crema to shrimp, braised pork, chicken and Soyrizo.
Tonella has been in business for several years under the name Doggos Gus, which recently soft-opened in its new East Village home. The business previously operated at Farmers Markets; inside the former Twisted Taps in North Park; and in a commercial property in Imperial Beach.
Tonella’s menu doesn’t exclude other Mexican faves such as street corn, loaded fries, and churros with ice cream. Bring it on!
