Magic and Mystique

By Frank Sabatini Jr.

Care for a side of hocus-pocus with your prime rib?

The Prestige Magic Lounge and Showroom has arrived in The Gaslamp Quarter. It is replete with a main stage and plenty of space between tables for roving magicians to wow dinner guests.

The ornate supper club-style venue was founded in 1997 by magician Terry Commons, who opened his first showroom in Idaho. With a wave of his wand, he hit instant success and went on to open other locations, including in Folsom, CA, and then in La Jolla. His downtown San Diego venture launched a couple weeks ago.

The venue is open to dinner guests by reservation-only Thursdays through Sundays. It features a menu developed by executive chef Johnny Hornibrook, who ran a food cart and catering company in the Bay Area before branching into the restaurant industry.

His entree choices include roasted prime rib, vegetable lasagna, and a wildly popular “French onion chicken” braised in caramelized onions and Gruyere cheese. Beer, hard seltzers, and wines by the glass or bottle are also available. (Fittingly, Spellbound Merlot and M.D. Freakshow Cabernet are in stock.)

Admission prices range from $100 to $125 and include a main performance and a three-course dinner.
