An Effort to Save this Bungalow

By Frank Sabatini Jr.

Kudos to Mission Hills Heritage for submitting a letter to the City of San Diego’s Development Services Department to prevent this classic bungalow from being razed.

Located at 820 Fort Stockton in Mission Hills, the structure was built originally as a single-family home in 1912, which makes it eligible for historic designation not only because of its age, but also because of the Craftsmen characteristics seen throughout.

The property was recently purchased by a developer who is seeking a permit to demolish the bungalow and replace it with 67 units of housing. (Disclaimer: This writer isn’t opposed to urban infill, but let’s not strip our hoods of all their old charm.)

Should the developer continue moving forward with the permit, those plans will come under city review for official historical designation, at which point the public will be invited to express support or opposition to the project.

Prior to operating as Maison, which closed last year, the bungalow was home to the Mission Hills Pet Shop. Both businesses enjoyed lengthy runs.
