What’s Up at Park and Market?

By Frank Sabatini Jr.

That glassy new four-story building you see occupying a full city block at the intersection of Park Blvd and Market Street is a “hub of scientific and civic energy, arts and culture, and human experiences unlike any other in the United States,” says Pradeep K. Khosla, chancellor of UC San Diego.

Named Park & Market and situated a stone’s throw from the Blue Trolley Line, the university project came at a cost of $75 million. The result is 66,760 square feet of space replete with a 225-seat black box theater, a 58-seat cinema, multiple exhibit galleries, a computer lab, classrooms, conference rooms, a bistro, and more. At ground level is a dramatic, curvy staircase leading to the other floors.

Construction of the building was made possible with philanthropic support of Malin Burnham and La Jolla residents, David and Claire Guggenheim. Visit the website to book educational programs and art/cultural events.
