Hunting for the City’s Best Desserts? We found some.
By Frank Sabatini Jr.
The sugar angels recently flew us upon their wings to restaurants and cafes dishing up desserts of a higher order. So if you’re ready to cast aside those carb meters that helped make for a slimmer waist this summer, then it’s time to rest on your laurels and indulge in some of our sinful faves.
S’more Sliders
Kindred/South Park
Snickerdoodle cookies form the base of these irresistable sliders at Kindred, which is an all-vegan restaurant flaunting devious Gothic-style décor. Consider this dessert an adult version of s’mores, which includes dreamy marshmallow fluff, dark chocolate, and Maldon salt.
Dark Chocolate “Marquise”
Parc Bistro/Bankers Hill
This is a stupendous creation, even if you’re indifferent to chocolate. We’re talking about a decadent puck of creamy dark-chocolate mousse enrobed in dark chocolate. The endorphin rush occurs upon first bite, when the mousse and its delicate shell melt rapidly on the tongue. The experience intensifies when your fork hits the dark Oreo-like crust.
20-Layer Chocolate Cake
LAVO/Gaslamp Quarter
Ever since Tao Group Hospitality recently rolled into town with LAVO, which took over the massive space left behind by Searsucker, the restaurant’s dramatic chocolate cake has been all the rage. The cake rises up with 20 alternating layers of devil’s food crumb and peanut butter mascarpone. Yes, it’s shareable, but who in their right mind wants to give any of it up?
Blood Orange Ricotta Cake
Extraordinary Desserts/Little Italy
When our wallets are stuffed, we indulge in this luxurious whole cake (6 or 8 inches), which tastefully combines sweet and refreshing blood oranges with rich, creamy ricotta cheese. The dessert takes on the additions of raspberries and cranberries for an extra-supreme quality, which is exactly what gives this European-inspired bakery and cafe its prestigious reputation. The cake is priced at $64 and $74, respectively. There is also a Bankers Hill location.
Ultimate Cinnamon Roll
Cardellino/Mission Hills
If you want to go straight to the sweet stuff during brunch at Cardellino (9 AM to 2:30 PM Saturdays and Sundays), then look no further than this sexy cinnamon roll, which is a huge cut above what you’ll find at malls and airports. The creation is joyfully enhanced with pecan ice cream, vanilla bean glaze, and tangy currants.
