A Chunk of Park Boulevard History Is Up For Sale

The landmark Embassy Hotel at 3645 Park Boulevard, on the border of Hillcrest and North Park, recently went onto the market for an undisclosed price. Built in 1929, the four-story structure contains 79 rooms and sits charmingly on a 27,000-square-foot lot. It is cross-listed on various real estate sites and categorized as an adaptive-reuse property.
Estimates based on real estate databases and algorithms put the property’s worth between $21 million and $26 million.
Over the years, the hotel has accommodated both long-term guests and fleeting travelers preferring an urban experience. During the 1930s and 1940s, the hotel was considered an upscale, sophisticated choice, given its proximity to Balboa Park and teeming University Avenue a few blocks north.
In addition, several ground-level restaurants came and went over the decades, including a coffee shop when the hotel first opened.
Many San Diegans with an appreciation for historical properties boasting aesthetic architectural details are keeping their fingers tightly crossed that the building doesn’t fall into the hands of reckless developers.
