We’re all in favor of flexing our brains for the sake of preserving memory and becoming our superior selves. One of the activities known for doing so is engaging in studious, strategic games of chess.
The time-consuming game is more popular than most people realize.
San Diego has several chess clubs that gather a couple times a month at various locations around town. In the metro area, players of all skill levels meet in the first-floor lobby of the San Diego Central Library in the East Village from 4:00 to 5:30p every Thursday and Friday. Organizers say it is the biggest chess club in the city, and they advise players to get there early to take advantage of limited tables.
The library provides boards and chess pieces, although participants are welcome to bring in their own.
Other chess sessions are held throughout the city on any given week at venues in Mission Valley, Mira Mesa, Pacific Beach and others.
