Checkmate

A new recreational amenity involving knights, bishops, and kings has been installed at Waterfront Park.

Tucked into the park’s southeast corner are several permanent chess tables that were recently introduced by County Board of Supervisors Chair Nathan Fletcher during a youth tournament of chess enthusiasts. (Fletcher admits he’s been a big fan of the game since childhood.)

The square, concrete tables include one that is ADA accessible and are open to the public. The chess pieces are available on a first-come, first-serve basis from 9a to 5p daily at the Waterfront Park office, which is located at the south entrance of the County Administration Center building at 1600 Pacific Highway.

Look for additional family-friendly installations in the park as the county’s Department of Parks and Recreation plans on making more improvements by spring of next year.
