Are you one of the 800-plus San Diego residents or businesses waiting without end for money or refunds owed to you by companies, organizations or vendors? If so, the City of Diego wants to hear from you by June 16.
According to the city’s latest unclaimed monies report, there is a whopping $916,418 of unclaimed funds that can be returned to residents and businesses. Their amounts range from $1 to $28,000. The reason why these checks ended up in city holding is because they were deemed “undeliverable” by the United States Postal Service. In many cases the snafus were due to address changes or wrongly written addresses. Fortunately, the city can resend the checks to recipients using current records.
Last year’s unclaimed monies totaled $818,000. On average, only between 45 and 55 percent of the funds are claimed each year.
“Returning unclaimed money is part of our commitment to financial transparency and responsibility,” said Roma Nichols, disbursements manager for the city’s Department of Finance.
Nichols urges anyone in the city of San Diego who thinks they might be owed money to search through the database by name and/or business before filing a claim through the site.
