A new shop for bookworms (By Frank Sabatini Jr.)
Comings and Goings in Mission Hills
By Frank Sabatini Jr.
The new Library Shop Mission Hills at 925 W. Washington St., is a treasure chest of books and novel merchandise. It occupies the former Mission Hills branch library, which moved several blocks east in 2019 to 215 Washington St.
After its grand opening in December, we meandered through the store and happened upon everything from Homer’s Iliad & Odyssey and Martha Stewart’s first iconic book titled Entertaining to colorful children’s books and biographies about legendary Hollywood stars. There is also a timely section of literary works that falls under the category of “Books About Immigration” as well as a few shelves devoted to local authors.
The store is more gift-focused compared to its smaller, original shop located inside downtown’s Central Library. Here in Mission Hills, you will find items such as Agatha Christie Bingo, unique bookends, T-shirts inscribed with pro-library slogans, and dozens of styles of book bags.
A block away is another fresh arrival to the neighborhood called Carlo. It’s a hidden cocktail lounge accessed from inside the popular Italian-style chophouse known as Cardellino, which is part of the Trust Restaurant Group. The space sits covertly behind Cardellino’s wine wall. Inside is a plush atmosphere that greets with dark colors and seductive lighting. But you will need a reservation to enter into these relaxing digs—and that might be tough during peak times since Carlo accommodates only 30 guests at a time.
In the meantime, Harley Gray Kitchen & Bar at the corner of West Washington and Goldfinch closed in December. Its owner, John Ealy, sold the prime property to the owners of neighboring La Puerta for an undisclosed price. The restaurant, which was known for its weekly lobster and prime rib specials, operated for 12 years.
