Charming South Park (South Park Walkabouts)
History, South Park

Did You Know…

By Frank Sabatini Jr.

……that the quaint and thriving neighborhood of South Park was once looked upon as being too far from Downtown San Diego to ever attract development and residents?

That view began changing in 1905, when building mogul E. Bartlett Webster installed sewer systems, electricity, and sidewalks in the area, and then sold dozens of lots to enticed home builders.

Eventually, the neighborhood was successfully branded as a high-class area, and became especially vibrant after an electric streetcar linking South Park to downtown went into operation on a freshly built railway a couple years later.

South Park today is home to scores of fabulous craftsman and Spanish revival homes, plus restaurants, cafes, small grocers, art galleries, and the lauded Albert Einstein Academy Charter School.
