Union Hall in Golden Hill (By Frank Sabatini Jr.)
Did You Know…
By Frank Sabatini Jr.
…that the multi-purpose Union Hall building in Golden Hill is a designated landmark built in 1948 by the local chapter of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners? With multiple suites and open spaces on both floors, the mid-Century-style building was once home to several trade unions, as well as the San Diego Reader and an auditorium that accommodated musicians and educational speakers.
Since its recent rehabilitation by Santa Ysabel Art Gallery, the structure is now home to Union Hall Gallery, which features art exhibits and community events. The 2,500-square-foot space greets visitors with tall arched ceilings and a wall of large, steel windows that offer views of downtown in the near distance. Located at the corner of Broadway and 23rd Street, it is considered one of San Diego’s most appealing and obscure art venues.
Other occupants of Union Hall include Flying Panther Tattoo, Ballet Basics, Blue Owl Promotional Products, and a couple of law firms.
