Downtown Property Acquired by Karl Strauss Brewing Company
By Frank Sabatini Jr.
Credited with being one of the first pioneers in San Diego’s craft brewing scene, Karl Strauss Brewing Company has reached a milestone by acquiring the downtown space where the business first started in 1989.
Founders Matt Rattner and Chris Cramer opted to purchase the brick-clad property for an undisclosed price after decades of leasing it.
“The pride we have for this acquisition cannot be overstated,” Rattner said. “We’ve poured our passion into this craft for decades, and witnessing it come full circle as we near our 35th anniversary is a remarkable achievement, serving as a testament to our enduring commitment to the city, the regional brewing industry, and our guests.”
The business was named after Cramer’s late cousin and original brew master, Karl M. Strauss. To date the company has brewed more than 140 styles of beer – and since 2009 it has earned more than 121 medals from competitions and beer critics.
Rattner and Cramer indicated they have “big ambitions” for the acquired property while seeking to re-imagine the space as a venue that pays homage to San Diego’s independent brewing evolution.
