East Village Alert: Izola’s Famed Croissants Are Returning
By Frank Sabatini Jr.
Back in November of 2021, in our interview with croissant master Jeffrey Brown, we spoke about how his East Village bakery was gaining rapid popularity. Although little did he know during our chat that he would have to eventually shut down the business for a while in order to regroup and expand.
After operating for a few years from a small loft in the Ratner Building, his Izola bakery ceased operations late last year, leaving scores of fans in a state of sudden deprivation over Brown’s enthralling, airy croissants and artisan sourdough loaves.
But salvation is just around the corner as Brown is getting ready to open a new, bigger location in the coming month.
Izola will resurrect at 1429 Island Ave, only a short distance from its original location. In the near future, Brown will also introduce Izola Main, a zero-emission development kitchen in City Heights. Though for now, the bakery’s established repertoire of croissants and bread loaves will return along with new sweet and savory options that promise to deliver cutting-edge flavors.
