Major Affordable-Housing Project Coming to the East Village
By Frank Sabatini Jr.
City officials and construction crews recently broke ground at 1335 Broadway near 13th Street for an upcoming project called Harrington Heights, which will give way to 270 affordable rental units.
According to the San Diego Housing Commission, those units will remain affordable for 55 years. They will be earmarked for households with incomes up to 50 percent of the Area Median Income, which is approximately $62,000 for a three-person household. Some of the units will serve San Diegans with developmental disabilities as well as individuals earning about $24,000 a year or less.
Chelsea Investment Corporation is the developer of the project, which will consist of 224 studios, 22 one-bedroom units, and three two-bedroom “manager’s units.” The cost of the project is estimated to be nearly $143 million.
San Diego Councilmember Stephen Whitburn was on hand at the groundbreaking ceremony and stated: “This is an example of the kind of housing that San Diego needs to build. It’s deeply affordable and will help people who are struggling the most.”
