San Diego’s ‘Best Pizzas’ Called Out by The Washington Post
By Frank Sabatini Jr.
It took us by surprise when one of our country’s most prestigious newspapers known for its political brand of journalism started naming off “best pizza spots” in the U.S. Rarely do we see such culinary hootin’ and tootin’ in the Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post.
Yet sure enough, a small handful of San Diego kitchens made the cut in the Post’s roundup that looked specifically at California.
The “study” was conducted by tapping into more than 85,000 Yelp reviews of independent pizzerias and localized chains. (Sorry Domino’s, Round Table, Pizza Hut, etc., this high-level editorial pizza party wasn’t for you.)
Out of seven pizza joints named within San Diego County as “best in California,” five are found in metro San Diego. They are: Sicilian Thing Pizza, Caffe Calabria, and Gelati & Peccati, all in North Park. New York-style Bronx Pizza in Hillcrest and Detroit-style Square Pizza in Pacific Beach were cited as well.
The other two are GP Diner in Encinitas and Mamma Pinsa by Pinsarella in Escondido.
Bravo to all of them for helping to keep San Diego’s food scene in the national spotlight.
