Put some aesthetics into your journals. (Golden Spiral Studio)
Create a Crafty Journal in Golden Hill
By Frank Sabatini Jr.
Only at the modest, tucked-away Golden Spiral Studio in Golden Hill will you find eager journal writers making their own leather-bound notebooks while oftentimes jazzing them up with a variety of personal touches.
The intimate workshops last around two hours each. And they sell out fast. The cost is $80, which includes all supplies, including a choice of two different-size notebooks.
“I walked in with only my keys and phone and walked out with a leather-bound journal in hand,” said recent class participant Edwin Real, who is the administrator of the popular Facebook group, Eating and Drinking in San Diego.
Real opted for an understated design with his initials embossed onto the front leather panel, which he cut to size with special cutters. Yet for those who want to further swoop up the covers and backs of their journals, the studio also provides everything from ribbons and charms to metal hardware and lace. The aesthetic possibilities are endless.
The workshops are run by Golden Spiral’s founder, Katie Linnaea Cartwright, who is an artist and designer.
Upcoming classes this month will be held daily from Nov. 19–23 and on Nov. 28 and 29. Times vary. Lessons in sewing are also in the offing. Click here to view the full calendar and register.
