Did You Know…
By Frank Sabatini Jr.
…that the working carousel in Seaport Village is one of the most historic in the country? And that it made numerous pit stops before getting here?
The carousel shows off 54 animals and two horse-drawn chariots. It was hand-carved in 1895 in Brooklyn, NY by Danish-American craftsman Charles I.D. Looff, who built dozens of other carousels in his lifetime as well as roller coasters and Ferris wheels.
This particular work made its debut in 1904 at an amusement park in Dallas. Then in the mid-1950s, it moved to Pacific Ocean Park in Santa Monica, CA before moving 20 years later to Washington State. Her next stops were Portland, Oregon, then Columbus, Ohio, and then Burbank, CA before arriving in Downtown San Diego in 2004. By all accounts, this is the carousel’s final destination.
To the delight of both kids and adults, the ride is open from 11:30a to 4:30p daily. The cost is $4.
