Return of the Sightly Big Ships
By Frank Sabatini Jr.
Massive luxury liners will soon become part of downtown’s backdrop again, as the cruising industry returns to life. In kicking off the October-May cruise season, which was non-existent last year because of Covid, the Embarcadero’s two main cruise terminals will make way for such marvels as the Disney Wonder, the Koningsdam and Zuiderdam by Holland America, and the Norwegian Jewel by Norwegian Voyages. Other eye-popping vessels by Celebrity, Princess and Oceania will also enter the mix.
The Port of San Diego currently lists about 100 calls on its 2021-2022 schedule, with the ships traveling to places like the Mexican Riviera, Baja, Hawaii, and the Panama Canal. That number closely matches the number of calls during the 2018-2019 season.
Note: Covid measures have been established on all cruise lines, which means passengers 12 years and older must show proof of vaccination and/or take Covid tests prior to boarding.
